Storm Kristin Hits Portugal
I've now been almost 17 hours without internet here in Lisbon. I slept throught the majority of the storm surprisingly. Winds went up to 240km/h in some areas. From what I've heard so far, 5 people died. Power also went out but came back at around noon. Networking/telecomunications however, are still affected. I went on two walks today just to send some SMSs to my friends letting them know I'm okay.
Last year we were also affected by a major power outtage. The whole Iberian peninsula went dark due to a mistake on the Spanish side of the eletric grid. It created a cascate effect that brought down the eletrical grid of 2 whole countries. This was a nightmare. I can't even begin to tell you the misinformation that started circualating. Probably the craziest one was that we were being hit by a Russian attack and that some Russian warships were being detected heading towards Portugal (I obviously believed it; Not falling for it as easily in the future).
Perhaps the funniest thing about this whole thing is that I use 3 Philips Hue bulbs in my room, which require a Wi-Fi connection with my Home Hub. You're probably seeing where this is going... I haven't been able to turn on my bedroom lights since the storm since I have no Wi-Fi...
